France has launched a formal investigation into the 2018 murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, according to court documents. A judge specializing in crimes against humanity initiated the inquiry following complaints filed by two non-governmental organizations.

The organizations accused Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman of torture and forced disappearance in connection with Khashoggi's death. The Washington Post columnist was killed at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul. French prosecutors will examine evidence previously gathered by Turkish authorities and international media investigations.
