Brigadier General Hossein Mohayedi, spokesman for Iran's Revolutionary Guards, stated that seven major communications cables running beneath the Strait of Hormuz could be targeted, according to the Anadolu Agency citing sources tracking the matter.

The seven cables are not purely internet lines: they also carry financial transactions for oil and gas trade measured in trillions, in addition to logistics data networks serving military bases in the region, according to the agency's reporting.

What Mohayedi did not say warrants closer examination: he did not specify a timeline, did not mention implementation methods, and did not link the threat to an explicit political condition. The statement in its current form is a calibrated warning, not an operational announcement.

The context added by Anadolu expands the scope of risks: contrary to common belief that the internet travels via satellites, physical cables submerged on the ocean floor carry more than 97 percent of global data traffic. A Strait of Hormuz disruption therefore is not a local Gulf communications crisis, but a potential strike against the entire international internet infrastructure.

Iranian officials and media outlets linked to Tehran added a parallel threat concerning the imposition of mandatory taxes and licenses on major U.S. technology companies or the cutting off of data flow to them, broadening the pressure arena beyond submarine infrastructure.
