Halk TV General Director Toktaş Resigns, Rejecting Receivership Decision

Halk TV General Director Suat Toktaş announced his resignation from his position through a social media post. Toktaş stated, "I am resigning from my position as general director, which I have held since January 10, 2024, by refusing to work with a receiver."

The appointment of the receiver stems from an investigation being conducted by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office into Halk TV owner Cafer Mahiroğlu. Under the prosecutor's coordination, the Istanbul Provincial Police Department's Financial Crimes Division carried out an operation in which Mahiroğlu faced allegations including bribery, bid rigging, and money laundering from criminal proceeds.

As part of the investigation, seven people were arrested, four were placed under house arrest, and one was subjected to judicial monitoring.

Halk TV ranks among Turkey's most-watched opposition-leaning channels. The appointment of the receiver has reignited discussions about pressure on independent broadcasting in the mainstream media.
