Lake Küçükçekmece in western Istanbul has turned brown after sewage mixed into the channels that feed the lake. According to Cumhuriyet, the wastewater flowing into the lake has completely altered its color and appearance, creating a disturbing scene along the shoreline.
Lake Küçükçekmece is not only one of Istanbul's important wetland areas but also home to an ecosystem that directly affects the quality of life of the densely populated surrounding communities. The intrusion of wastewater has reignited concerns over water pollution and inadequate infrastructure.
Neither Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality nor the relevant water and sewerage authority has issued an official statement in response to the report. Cumhuriyet, which documented the contamination with footage and images, called for an investigation into its source.
