Floods in the Peloponnese: Vehicles swept into sea, villagers relocated to sports halls

Heavy rainfall struck the Peloponnese: parked vehicles were swept into the sea by floodwaters in Karavostasi village in Mani prefecture, while the villages of Kokkala, Alipa, and Itilo suffered severe damage. The Anadolu Agency reported local media accounts citing the Greek news agency AMNA.

Mani Deputy Mayor Yeorgia Lirofoni told AMNA that numerous homes and shops were flooded and that roads and bridges sustained serious damage. Lirofoni said residents seeking to spend the night safely were relocated to sports halls in undamaged neighboring areas.

Greece's Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis announced on his X account that a woman in Itilo village was injured by a lightning strike while inside a vehicle.

According to Greece's Meteorological Service, wind speeds reached 112 kilometers per hour on Mount Penteli; 107 kilometers per hour was recorded in Karystos district on Euboea Island, and 104 kilometers per hour on Tinos Island. In the Peloponnese, the villages of Mani prefecture were among those where infrastructure renewal work had not been completed following the 2021 fire season.
