Earthquake researcher Prof. Dr. Mustafa Sözbilir stated that the earthquake that occurred in Adana developed on the Savrun Fault, which was triggered by the destructive earthquakes centered on February 6, 2023 in Kahramanmaraş. According to Sözbilir, the aftershock earthquake activities that accumulated on the fault line over the past three years played a decisive role in the formation of this earthquake.
In a statement relayed by Anadolu Agency, Sözbilir emphasized that the February 6 earthquakes altered the stress distribution in the fault systems of the region. It was assessed that the Savrun Fault reached a critical threshold due to ongoing activity during this process.
The Kahramanmaraş earthquakes resulted in the loss of more than 50,000 lives and reactivated numerous fault lines. It was stressed that monitoring of fault systems in the region carrying earthquake risk continues.
