The Turkish Football Federation rejected Fenerbahçe's request to postpone their away match against Gençlerbirliği in the first week of the Trendyol Super League, which the club had sought because of fixture congestion. Fenerbahçe Football Director Oğuz Çetin announced the decision on FBTV.
The yellow-and-navy side will visit Gençlerbirliği's stadium on Saturday, August 15, followed by their UEFA Champions League play-off first match against Lyon at home in Kadıköy on Tuesday evening, August 18. That means two critical matches in three days.
Çetin said, "We have not been able to stay in the Champions League for 17 years; unfortunately, our postponement request was not accepted." Given that the TFF has treated similar requests from major clubs differently in the past, the rejection decision carries particular weight. The Lyon tie represents Fenerbahçe's last chance to qualify for the European group stage.
