Turkish police raided the headquarters of pro-opposition broadcaster Halk TV early Wednesday, halting its live output and arresting 11 people, the channel and prosecutors confirmed.

Authorities appointed a government trustee to run the station. Halk's news channel and its YouTube live stream both went offline following the operation, which began shortly before 7:00am local time (0400 GMT).

Halk chairman Cafer Mahiroglu said seven of his family members were among those detained and condemned the action as "a dark day for Turkey".

The raid is the latest in a series of moves against opposition-aligned media. Two weeks earlier, authorities shut down the website and social media accounts of T24, a leading digital news outlet, citing what they described as "LGBT propaganda".
