President Donald Trump is considering expanding his plan to reduce the US military presence in Europe beyond the 5,000 troops already scheduled to leave Germany, according to NATO sources cited by Kyiv Post.
Italy has emerged as a potential location for additional troop withdrawals as Trump pursues his agenda to reduce America's military footprint across the continent. The move follows Trump's previously announced intention to pull approximately 5,000 personnel from German bases.
The potential reductions come amid rising tensions within NATO regarding burden-sharing and defence spending commitments. Italy hosts several significant US military installations, including Naval Support Activity Naples, a critical hub for US operations in the Mediterranean and Middle East.
NATO officials have expressed concern about the timing and scope of any withdrawal, particularly given ongoing security challenges in Eastern Europe and the Middle East. The Trump administration has not yet formally announced expanded withdrawal plans.
