In Turkey's denim sandblasting (sandblasting) sector, banned since 2009, Ferhat Gezer, who worked in unregistered workshops in Istanbul, died from silicosis. According to Cumhuriyet newspaper's report, Gezer was among workers whose lungs were damaged by prolonged exposure to silica dust.
Silicosis is an occupational disease caused by inhalation of fine silica particles that leaves permanent damage to the lungs and has no cure. Turkey became one of the first countries in the world to ban the denim sandblasting process in 2009; however, unregistered workshops have continued their operations.
This case has brought the sector's fatal health consequences back to public attention once again. According to Cumhuriyet, while the ban remains only on paper, dozens of workers still work under the same conditions and face similar health risks.
