According to Haber 7, an updated list of countries with the largest outstanding debt to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has been made public. The list also reveals the amount of Turkey's current debt to the Fund.
Turkey has a long history with IMF borrowing. Under then-Prime Minister Erdoğan, the country fully repaid its IMF debt in 2013 and championed the "IMF-free Turkey" narrative. In recent years, however, debate has continued over how Ankara's relationship with the Fund might be reshaped amid successive currency crises and high inflation.
The list once again underscores the continued reliance of emerging economies on international financial institutions. Turkey's current debt figure and a comparison with other countries are available in the full report.
