Court of Cassation Overturns Fenerbahçe Bus Attack Case on Procedural Grounds

The Court of Cassation has taken a new legal step in the case concerning the armed attack on the Fenerbahçe team bus that took place in the Sürmene district of Trabzon in 2015. The high court requested that a decision rejecting an appeal against a previous no-prosecution ruling be overturned in the public interest. The grounds for reversal were based not on the merits of the case, but on procedural law.

The attack occurred as the bus carrying the Fenerbahçe delegation passed through the Sürmene district; the front windshield of the bus was shot at, and driver Ufuk Kıran was wounded. The incident was recorded in history as one of the most striking security breaches in Turkish football history.

Despite the ten years that have passed, the case has continued to remain shrouded in legal uncertainty. The Court of Cassation's latest decision is regarded as a critical threshold, as it opens the way for the file to be returned to court.
