Egyptian Parliament Convenes to Authorize al-Sisi's Military Support for Saudi Arabia Against Houthis
Supreme Council of Defense announced full backing for Riyadh, and al-Sisi affirmed that Saudi security is an integral part of Egypt's security.
Egypt's parliament convened in an emergency session requested by President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi to consider granting him authority to provide defensive military support to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, should Riyadh request it in the face of ongoing Houthi attacks.
Al-Sisi stated in an earlier address that Egypt would take "any measure to protect" the kingdom, but he conditioned this on obtaining parliamentary approval. The following day, Egypt announced it would provide "all necessary and possible support to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to defend its security and stability".
Egypt's Supreme Council of Defense, chaired by al-Sisi, affirmed in its statement that it "stands fully" with the kingdom to defend its resources, territorial integrity, and Islamic holy sites.
Houthi attacks targeting the kingdom have included the capital Riyadh, its airports, and oil facilities. Al-Sisi had previously stated that the kingdom's security is "an integral part" of Egyptian security.
What remained unspecified in official statements is the nature of anticipated support, its scale, and deployment mechanisms — a notable absence amid successive political assurances.
