4.9 magnitude earthquake strikes Saimbeyli district in Adana

A 4.9 magnitude earthquake struck the Saimbeyli district of Adana at 04:26 today. According to the Anadolu Agency, the tremor, which occurred in the middle of the night, woke residents in the region from their sleep.

Adana and its surroundings, located in one of Turkey's most active seismic zones, have experienced severe earthquakes in past years. A 4.9 magnitude earthquake, particularly if shallow-focused, can cause damage to older building stock in district centers.
