Akkuyu's Nuclear Waste to Be Stored in Ankara's Polatlı

Nuclear waste from the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) under construction in Mersin will be stored at a facility to be established in the Polatlı district of Ankara, it has been reported. According to information reported by Cumhuriyet newspaper, both high- and low-level radioactive waste are planned to be stored at this facility.

Akkuyu holds the distinction of being Turkey's first nuclear power plant, built by Russia's state-owned company Rosatom. Upon completion, the plant is expected to reach an electricity generation capacity of approximately 4,800 megawatts.

The selection of Polatlı as a nuclear waste storage site is expected to raise concerns among local residents and environmental organisations.
