According to Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor's Office statement, Gökçek sold villa purchased for 743 thousand lira for 694 thousand dollars profit after 11 years

Former Ankara Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Melih Gökçek, who gave a statement as a suspect at the Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, admitted to purchasing the detached villa located in Funda Sitesi in Çankaya Oran for 743 thousand lira in 2007. Gökçek stated in his prosecutor's statement that he sold this house, which he sold for 1 million 265 thousand dollars in 2018, to "support his son Ahmet."

The exchange rate difference puts the scale of the table before our eyes: when Gökçek purchased the house in January 2007, the dollar was around 1.30 lira; therefore, 743 thousand lira corresponded to approximately 571 thousand dollars. In the 2018 sale, Gökçek made a net profit of 694 thousand dollars. The fact that the villa gained such value over 11 years raises the question of whether it is related to urban planning decisions during his tenure as municipality mayor; the villa in question and its purchase price had been discussed in the public sphere during that period as well.

In the prosecutor's file, it was also found that a separate case was opened against Gökçek with a demand for 1 to 5 years imprisonment on allegations that he carried out unauthorized construction modifications at the villa in violation of the urban development plan. It was also recorded that the site management and Çankaya Municipality took action regarding these modifications. Gökçek's statement concretely reveals the scope and magnitude of wealth in the investigation being conducted by the Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor's Office.
