The Bakırköy Chief Prosecutor's Office has sought a prison sentence of up to 4 years and 6 months in an indictment prepared against Ali Nasuh Mahruki, founder of the Search and Rescue Association (AKUT). According to information, the prosecutor's office determined that the crime was committed through press and broadcast media and requested that the sentence be increased by half proportionally.
The investigation was launched under the charge of 'inciting public hatred and hostility or degradation' based on a July 15 social media post made from Mahruki's account. Mahruki was detained on July 17.
Mahruki is a figure known for leading dozens of search and rescue operations, particularly the 1999 Marmara earthquake. Since 2016 in Türkiye, this charge has been repeatedly applied in cases filed based on social media posts; sentences imposed in previous cases have ranged between 1 and 3 years.
