The Banking Regulation and Supervision Agency raised the threshold limit for calculating minimum payment ratios on credit cards from 50,000 TL to 100,000 TL. The regulation took effect today.

Under the new rule, cardholders with a limit of 100,000 TL or below must pay 20 percent of their period debt as minimum payment, while those with limits above 100,000 TL must pay 40 percent. Previously, this threshold was 50,000 TL; in other words, a shopkeeper from Kadıköy who made purchases on a card with a 60,000 TL limit last month paid 20 percent, but if that same shopkeeper's limit increased to 110,000 TL, they now have to pay 40 percent.

Based on concrete examples: on a card with a limit of 100,000 TL or below, the minimum payment on a 30,000 TL period debt is calculated as 6,000 TL. On a card with a limit exceeding 100,000 TL, this figure rises to 24,000 TL on a 60,000 TL debt.

According to data from the Central Bank of Turkey, interest is also applied in tiers: a lower monthly maximum rate applies to debts under 30,000 TL, and a higher rate applies to amounts above that threshold. BDDK introduced this change to curb accumulating period debts on high-limit cards. The previous threshold of 50,000 TL had become effectively meaningless due to inflation.
