1,200 detained in France: Louis Vuitton, Apple, and Hermès stores ransacked
On October 17, cost-of-living protests turned violent in Paris, Lyon, Marseille, and Bordeaux; 1,200 people were detained according to AFP.
Looted, burned, destroyed: On Saturday, October 17, crowds protesting the cost of living in France attacked luxury stores, supermarkets, and public buildings across the country.
According to reports from AFP and Le Parisien, security forces detained 1,200 people. Violence was documented in Paris, Lyon, Marseille, Bordeaux, and Lille.
On Rue Sainte-Catherine, Bordeaux's main shopping street, face-covered groups ransacked Louis Vuitton and Apple stores. Another Apple branch was looted in Lille, while a Hermès store was attacked in Marseille. Luxury brands were not the only target: pharmacies, supermarkets, and clothing stores also came under assault.
In Lyon, a historic 174-year-old building caught fire. The tourism information center at Bellecour Square sustained major damage following intervention by protesters.
The protests were ignited by high school demonstrations that have continued since September. Former members of the Yellow Vests movement, students, and unions supported the actions, demanding wage increases, improved public services, and increased funding for education. Most of the demonstrations remained peaceful, but the situation shifted when face-covered groups clashed with security forces; police used tear gas and water cannons.
