German nationals top EU list for temporary asylum applications in Russia in 2026
49 German citizens applied for temporary asylum in Russia in the first nine months of 2026, the highest figure among EU member states, Russian Interior Ministry data shows.
German nationals filed more temporary asylum applications in Russia than citizens of any other EU country between January and September 2026, according to a Russian Interior Ministry report.
TASS reported 49 German citizens applied for temporary asylum in Russia over that period. Latvia ranked second with 36 applicants, followed by Lithuania with 12. Italy and Estonia each recorded seven applications, France six, Bulgaria and the Czech Republic four each, and Greece three.
The pattern is consistent with prior years. German citizens filed 93 asylum applications in Russia in 2025, 116 in 2024, and 111 in 2023 — the highest figures among EU nationals in each of those years.
In total, 3,802 foreign nationals of all nationalities applied for asylum in Russia during the first three quarters of 2026.
