A Russian court has sentenced Tikhon Dzyadko, editor-in-chief of independent news outlet TV Rain, to eight years in prison in absentia on charges of spreading false information about the Russian armed forces.

Dzyadko, who fled Russia following the outlet's closure during the Ukraine conflict, faces accusations related to the station's war coverage. TV Rain was shut down by Russian authorities and remains blocked within the country.

The conviction underscores Moscow's continued crackdown on independent media and those critical of the military campaign.
