Erdoğdu in Silivri announces CHP resignation from prison
The 27th-term Istanbul lawmaker held at Marmara Prison pointed to the police entry into party headquarters on May 21 as a turning point in his decision.

Aykut Erdoğdu, a former CHP Istanbul lawmaker currently detained at Marmara Prison (Silivri), announced on Sunday via his social media account that he is resigning from CHP membership and will join the New Party.
Erdoğdu stated that he made the resignation decision at the moment police entered party headquarters on May 21, 2023, but said he was waiting for potential developments from the Supreme Court of Appeals or a Party Congress. In his statement, he used the phrase "I can no longer bear this burden."
Erdoğdu was detained as part of an operation targeting municipalities. Having served as an Istanbul lawmaker in the 27th term, Erdoğdu wrote that he anticipated the cost of his resignation could come in the form of extended detention or new charges.
This resignation, occurring during a period when the CHP was shaken by closure proceedings and discussions of interference at party headquarters last year, represents the latest chapter in the political rupture in which the party lost multiple lawmakers during that process.
