Melania Trump, the U.S. First Lady, announced on Friday that she has secured a localized ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine in the city of Oleshky, aimed at evacuating elderly residents and delivering humanitarian aid to them.

Melania described herself as the "sole mediator" in the negotiations, and said in a statement from her office that she initiated direct discussions with both Ukrainian and Russian leadership to establish the terms of the agreement. She added: "The remaining residents of Oleshky are predominantly elderly people who urgently need medical care, medication, food, and clean water. The residents live under severe electricity shortages, mined roads, and repeated military attacks. It was completely clear that without my intervention, it would have been impossible to deliver humanitarian aid to the city or to evacuate the elderly from it."

Melania clarified that "civilian, non-military leaders from both countries will work together to visit Oleshky residents in their homes and determine the level of assistance they need," noting that those who wish to leave will be transported to their preferred destination, whether Russia or Ukraine.

The Russian Ministry of Defense announced implementation of the ceasefire in the area beginning at 4 a.m. Moscow time on October 27, while Ukrainian officials reported that their ceasefire begins at 3 a.m. Kyiv time on the same day. Both Russian and Ukrainian officials confirmed the limited cessation of fire on Friday. Ukrainian authorities indicated that approximately 1,700 civilians remain in the city and that supply routes for food and medicine to it have been cut off.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed that Melania made a "critically important contribution," noting that President Vladimir Putin and President Donald Trump discussed the matter in an earlier phone call. Peskov said: "The military is working to coordinate the ceasefire in that area to facilitate this humanitarian mission. Those who wish to leave the settlement will be able to do so. And this of course requires intensive and complex preparation involving a wide range of different representatives." However, Peskov refrained from disclosing evacuation routes or the duration of the ceasefire, only stating that the operation "will certainly take at least a few days."

David Arakhamia, a Ukrainian parliamentarian and participant in the negotiations, pointed to the role of "the Pope and First Lady Melania Trump" in achieving the agreement, saying in a statement: "A process will soon begin to lift the siege on the city of Oleshky and its surroundings, with the aim of establishing permanent humanitarian corridors to safely evacuate civilians and deliver aid." Pope Leo had addressed the humanitarian crisis in Oleshky in a phone call with Putin last Friday while recovering in the hospital from lung cancer surgery, according to the Vatican, while the Kremlin indicated that Putin "supported" the Vatican's intention to ease the situation.

Dmytro Lubinets, human rights commissioner of the Ukrainian parliament and one of the negotiation leaders, said that "the operation will proceed gradually and is highly complex." For his part, Donald Trump praised his wife's efforts on Friday.
