CHP Mayor of Güzelbahçe Mustafa Günay Detained and Removed from Office

CHP Mayor of Güzelbahçe Mustafa Günay was detained and removed from office. According to reports from Birgun.net and Hürriyet, a deputy mayor election will be held at the municipality on June 5, 2025, following Günay's detention.

Sabah newspaper reported a separate development in the investigation process: threatening messages stating "We will kill you, just wait" were found to have been sent in connection with the Güzelbahçe Municipality investigation.

Güzelbahçe is a district municipality in İzmir. Günay's detention is being evaluated within the scope of investigations being conducted against CHP-led municipalities in recent times.

The municipal council will convene on June 5 to hold the deputy mayor election. Legal pressures on municipalities governed by the opposition CHP in Turkey continue to rank high on the political agenda in recent months.
