Agriculture and Forestry Minister Ibrahim Yumaklı announced that Turkey's first registered native sahlep varieties 'Balyumru' and 'Bolyumru' will enable sahlep to be produced in fields rather than harvested from nature, potentially increasing yields by up to four times. Anadolu Agency reported this development today.
According to Yumaklı, this registration represents a critical step both for protecting natural sahlep species and for increasing the country's sahlep production capacity. While Turkey holds an important position in global sahlep production, wild sahlep populations had faced severe pressure due to uncontrolled harvesting from nature.
With the integration of the new varieties into agricultural production, both an increase in export potential and a reduction in pressure on natural areas are anticipated. Minister Yumaklı noted that the research was conducted by research institutes under the Agriculture and Forestry Ministry.
