Fire engulfs Hitler's Eagle's Nest in Bavaria; suspect detained
About 200 firefighters battled the blaze at the Kehlsteinhaus near Berchtesgaden; police are investigating possible arson.
German police detained a suspect after fire engulfed the Kehlsteinhaus — Adolf Hitler's former mountain retreat in Bavaria — late Friday, triggering an emergency operation involving around 200 firefighters.
The fire alarm activated via a smoke detector at about 9:50pm local time. Emergency crews found the building completely ablaze on arrival. No injuries were reported.
Police spokesperson Lisa Maier said the retreat's remote Alpine location, at an altitude of more than 1,800 metres, complicated firefighting efforts. Investigators were examining whether a suspicious person taken into temporary custody was connected to the blaze.
German media reported that investigators suspected arson. The newspaper Bild said emergency responders encountered a motorcyclist travelling toward them on the way to the scene; he was subsequently detained, though his possible involvement remained under investigation. Police said a news conference was planned later Saturday.
Built between 1937 and 1938, the stone-and-granite structure stands on the Kehlstein mountain above Obersalzberg, near Berchtesgaden in southern Germany. The site survived World War II undamaged and has operated as a restaurant since 1952, also housing an exhibition on its Nazi-era history.
