Deaths from Lassa fever, which spreads from animals to humans, have risen to 190 in Nigeria this year. The increase in case numbers across the country has alarmed health authorities, prompting emergency measures to be implemented in affected regions.

Lassa fever is a contagious viral disease endemic to West Africa and known for its high mortality rate. The disease spreads to humans through contact with infected animals' feces or urine, particularly from rodents of the Mastomys genus. Symptoms include fever, headache, muscle pain, and in severe cases, internal bleeding.

Nigerian public health officials have warned citizens to exercise caution around infected animals and surfaces they may have contacted. Through public awareness campaigns, particularly in rural communities, hygiene practices and the importance of early diagnosis are being communicated. Authorities have advised anyone showing suspected symptoms to seek immediate medical attention without delay.
