Putin suggests Armenia EU membership referendum mirrors Ukraine situation

Russian President Vladimir Putin stated Friday that an Armenia-EU membership referendum would be "logical," while drawing parallels to circumstances preceding the Ukraine conflict, according to EurActiv.

Putin likened a potential Armenian referendum on EU membership to "the start of everything that's happening" in Ukraine, implying that Armenia's geopolitical reorientation toward Europe could trigger comparable instability in the South Caucasus region.

Armenian-EU relations have intensified as Yerevan seeks closer ties with Brussels, particularly following Azerbaijan's military operations in Nagorno-Karabakh. Armenia has gradually shifted its foreign policy orientation amid tensions with Russia-backed Azerbaijan.

The Russian leader's comments reflect Moscow's concern about losing influence in its traditional sphere of influence as former Soviet republics strengthen Western partnerships. Putin's statements suggest Russia views Armenian EU integration as a strategic threat comparable to Ukraine's westward movement.
