French President Emmanuel Macron announced the interception of the tanker DF Peak by the French Navy in the Indian Ocean. The vessel is linked to Russia's shadow fleet and is subject to sanctions imposed by the United States, European Union, United Kingdom, and Ukraine.

According to French Defense Minister Catherine Vautrin, the tanker is being escorted to Reunion for additional inspection. The operation took place approximately 450 nautical miles south of the island, a French overseas territory.

The French Naval Staff reported that inspectors boarded the vessel to verify its nationality after doubts emerged regarding the authenticity of its declared registration under the Benin flag. Macron stated that DF Peak is suspected of sailing under a false flag and participating in the illegal transportation of fuel.

DF Peak is at least the sixth shadow fleet tanker seized by French authorities in the past year.
