The United Arab Emirates is targeting completion of a new oil pipeline that bypasses the Strait of Hormuz by 2027, according to Bloomberg.
The project comes as part of the UAE's strategy to diversify its crude export routes and reduce its dependence on the Strait of Hormuz, the vital waterway through which approximately one-fifth of global oil supplies pass, and the surrounding region of which faces recurring geopolitical tensions that cast a shadow over international energy markets.
The strait represents an exceptionally sensitive strategic chokepoint, as massive oil shipments from Gulf producing states pass through it to markets in Asia, Europe, and beyond. Completing the new pipeline would give the UAE greater flexibility in exporting its crude and strengthen the security of its oil supplies in the face of any potential disruptions in this vital waterway, thereby reinforcing its position as a reliable oil supplier on the global stage.
