Villa Vie Odyssey Ship Suspends World Voyage After Fuel Costs Reach $8,000 Per Cabin Monthly

Villa Vie Residences, a U.S.-based company, announced the suspension of its Villa Vie Odyssey ship's world voyage after sharp increases in fuel prices made operations economically unviable.

Fuel costs per cabin surged monthly from $1,800 to $8,000 in some parts of Asia, which the company attributed to accelerating global energy price increases. The company attempted to reduce fuel consumption by slowing the ship's speed and spending longer periods in ports, but these measures proved insufficient to offset the exceptional cost increases. Additionally, passing the full burden to passengers was not a realistic option.

The ship, measuring approximately 200 meters in length with capacity for 650 passengers, carried around 200 passengers when disembarkation orders were issued, according to what Bloomberg reported from the company founder. The company is currently working on plans for passenger departure and temporary accommodation arrangements.

Villa Vie Odyssey had departed from Belfast in October 2024 on a voyage intended to sail continuously around the world, with the journey scheduled to last 3.5 years and visit approximately 150 countries. Before the suspension, the ship had completed more than 750 days of its world tour. The voyage had faced obstacles from the beginning, as the ship's departure was delayed due to maintenance work that kept passengers in Belfast for months, costing the company millions of pounds sterling.

Villa Vie Odyssey attracts passengers seeking to adopt sailing as a permanent lifestyle, and features multiple bars, restaurants, a swimming pool, and a pickleball court on board. Cabin purchase prices for permanent residence range between $120,000 and $440,000, while monthly rental prices start from $3,500.

The company announced it will dedicate the next 60 days to evaluating restructuring options and capital increase possibilities, while cautioning that there is no guarantee of any specific outcome at the end of this phase. The fate of the world voyage remains unknown for now.
