BBC has decided to end broadcasts on BBC Scotland and BBC 3 channels in pursuit of 500 million pounds in savings over two years. Radio 4 Extra is also among the channels to be shut down; portions of these broadcasts will be moved to BBC iPlayer, BBC Sounds and YouTube.

According to Anadolu Agency, BBC Director-General Tim Davie said in a note to staff that under mounting cost pressures, BBC must rebuild itself for a changing world while ensuring that every pound spent creates greater value for viewers, and "we all know this means difficult decisions." The statement noted that approximately 100 BBC News personnel will also be laid off.

According to reports in British media, closing radio and television channels along with staff cuts will save the corporation approximately 200 million pounds. According to The Guardian, laying off 100 people from BBC News will generate only 5.5 million pounds in savings; however, the target set for this unit is 51 million pounds. The Daily Mirror pointed to a layoff plan of 1,800-2,000 people announced in April, writing that this means one in every 10 staff members at the corporation will lose their job. The report also noted that 550 people at BBC News received notice of redundancy and 30 people at BBC Sport had their contracts terminated.

The channels and radio stations to be closed will continue broadcasting until the spring months of 2027.
