Trucks flying Chinese and North Korean flags crossed the New Yalu River vehicle bridge in both directions on Thursday morning, opening a four-lane road connection between Dandong in northern China and North Korea that was 12 years behind schedule.

Hundreds of people gathered in Dandong to watch the opening, taking selfies in front of the bridge before it opened. Some North Korean vehicles arrived decorated with flowers. The bridge spans 3,026 metres.

China is North Korea's largest trading partner and a key diplomatic backer. The new crossing is expected to substantially expand cross-border trade between the two countries.

"It's great," said one woman who came to watch, speaking to AFP without wishing to be named. "It's already been over 12 years. It's certainly going to be good for business," she added. Another local, Yu Shuyan, said she hoped the standard of living in North Korea would rise to the level seen in China.

Dandong, the Chinese border town on the crossing's northern bank, is dotted with Chinese and Korean shops and restaurants, reflecting the depth of ties the new infrastructure is designed to deepen.
