U.S. military forces deployed in Western Asia have reached a state of readiness to launch broad-scale attacks on Iran within 96 hours if President Donald Trump issues an order. CNN reported this information based on two U.S. officials; the officials noted that sufficient military capacity exists in the region but emphasized that Trump has not yet made a final decision on conducting the attack.

Sources speaking to CNN stated that the new operation would be far more comprehensive than previous limited operations. In earlier strikes, Iranian radar systems, missile launchers, and various military assets that Iran was able to restore to operational readiness in short timeframes had been targeted; the new plans were said to aim for more lasting damage to Iran's military capacity. The target list prepared by U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) and the Pentagon includes Iran's energy infrastructure, military facilities, and nuclear centers.

Current and former U.S. officials suggested that Trump could order a comprehensive operation by year's end; some assessed that a possible attack would be more likely to occur after the November 3 midterm elections. According to U.S. intelligence, Iran and Houthis in Yemen could target American troops and facilities in the region in response to a possible attack. While the White House left CNN's questions unanswered, the Pentagon stated that developing military options is among the institution's duties. CNN also reported that U.S. Central Command Admiral Brad Cooper visited the Strait of Hormuz on Sunday.
