France's third consecutive Saturday of street protests ended in clashes between police and demonstrators in Paris, Marseille, Lyon and Grenoble, with authorities deploying 70,000 officers nationwide.

The Interior Ministry put the total number of participants at approximately 320,000; organisers claimed close to one million. Protests began peacefully in the early afternoon, though demonstrators had already expressed anger that the Paris march was not routed through busier shopping streets. At the dispersal point in Paris, stones, bottles and fireworks were thrown at police, who responded with tear gas. In Marseille, Lyon and Grenoble, clashes broke out between police and black-clad protesters later in the afternoon.

Authorities imposed local curfews in Paris and other cities ahead of the evening, after online calls for masked Halloween gatherings aimed at giving police what organisers described as a "night of darkness."

The unrest follows weeks of demonstrations over purchasing power, education policy and austerity. Several students were seriously injured in earlier police operations, a factor demonstrators said had pushed them onto the streets. Interior Minister Laurent Nunez had pledged a firm security response before the march.

The protest movement is not exhausting itself: students and pupils have announced new school blockades for Tuesday, and a coalition of trade unions has called a general strike for Thursday.
