Istanbul Chief Prosecutor Detains Son of Sarıgül Over 80 Million Euro Money Laundering Allegations
Ömer Sarıgül, son of YENİ Party Deputy Mustafa Sarıgül, and his ex-wife Aylin Kotil are accused of money laundering through domestic and international companies.
Istanbul Chief Prosecutor detains suspects: Ömer Sarıgül, son of YENİ Party Deputy Mustafa Sarıgül, former politician ex-wife Aylin Kotil, Volkan Aslanbaş, and Cavidan Tanrah Artuner were arrested in an operation conducted in the early morning hours. An arrest warrant was issued for his brother Emir Sarıgül.
According to the allegations, the investigation began with a complaint filed by German citizens K.P. and M.B. The Chief Prosecutor's indictment highlights three separate amounts: a 80 million Euro contract arrangement, a 100 million Euro wire transfer, and a promise to transfer a 1 billion Euro fund abroad by using public influence. Additionally, a cash offer of 1.5 million Euro is noted.
As part of the operation, SÖZCÜ TV host Murat Ağırel, who was under house arrest and had his home searched in the early morning hours, was taken to Istanbul Police Headquarters.
The Sarıgül family is not facing a judicial process of this scale for the first time; Mustafa Sarıgül was the target of corruption investigations during his tenure as mayor, but those cases resulted in decisions of non-prosecution. The investigation is ongoing.
