Tornado in Kepez kills 4 construction workers, 1 injured

A tornado that formed at a construction site in Fevzi Çakmak neighborhood in Kepez district destroyed two containers where workers were staying; 5 workers inside were thrown into the air. According to Anadolu Agency, 2 of the workers died at the scene, and 2 died at the hospital where they were taken. The injured worker's health condition was reported to be good.

Antalya Governor Hulusi Şahin, speaking at the scene, emphasized that no tornado reports came from any other point in the city and that the incident remained localized only to this construction site. "We are facing a very unusual natural event. There is nothing in the surrounding buildings, but we are dealing with a tornado that completely destroyed two containers only in this area," he said. Governor Şahin noted that the same tornado caused a crane at the site to overturn, but no deaths or injuries occurred in that incident. He also stressed that the deaths and injuries at the construction site were not caused by the crane overturning.

The Meteorology General Directorate had issued a yellow alert for heavy rainfall in Antalya before the event.

It was reported that search operations were continuing at the construction site to determine whether any other injured or deceased persons were present.
