Rioters attack Paris police station as nationwide protests turn violent
Central Paris mayor Ariel Weil says organised groups struck the precinct and the 10th arrondissement town hall as 550,000 demonstrated across France.

Organised groups attacked a police station in central Paris on Saturday, 17 October, as nationwide demonstrations against soaring fuel prices and declining purchasing power escalated into widespread unrest, central Paris mayor Ariel Weil told broadcaster BFMTV.
"Some law enforcement forces in central Paris were forced to defend the precinct," Weil said, adding that the police commissioner struggled to deploy personnel across multiple fronts simultaneously. Small groups also struck the 10th arrondissement town hall and looted shops throughout the day, according to Paris Deputy Mayor Emmanuel Gregoire, who said radicals had "trashed entire streets".
The Interior Ministry counted 550,000 protesters nationwide on 17 October, including 110,000 in Paris. By Saturday evening, Interior Minister Laurent Nunez announced 400 detentions across the country and pledged authorities would continue to pursue those responsible.
The protests began as demonstrations against fuel-price increases and a drop in living standards before escalating into clashes with police in several cities.
