UN Secretary-General António Guterres has welcomed the announced ceasefire in Oleshky, a town in the Russian-occupied Kherson region, and urged that similar arrangements be extended to other areas where civilians are suffering.

Spokesman Stéphane Dujarric said Guterres "commends the efforts of all who have contributed" to the agreement announced by US First Lady Melania Trump on 23 October.

The White House said Russia and Ukraine had agreed to a ceasefire in the Oleshky area from 29 October to allow humanitarian aid deliveries and civilian evacuations through a designated safe corridor. Separately, Russia's Chief of the General Staff, Army General Valery Gerasimov, announced that Russian forces would impose a ceasefire in the Kherson direction from 4:00 a.m. Moscow time (1:00 a.m. GMT) on 27 October for the humanitarian operation.

Guterres said he hoped the pause would "enable urgent provision of life-saving assistance" and that evacuations be conducted in strict compliance with international humanitarian law. An independent US media organisation will monitor and document the operation on the ground.
