FBI accuses North Korea of stealing $6.3 billion from Binance exchange
North Korean group TraderTraitor attacked Binance around October 29, 2026; the exchange allocated 50% of its SAFU fund to compensate for losses.

The FBI has accused North Korean authorities of a massive cyberattack on crypto exchange Binance that resulted in the theft of virtual assets worth $6.3 billion. The attack was carried out around October 29, 2026, according to an FBI press statement.
According to the FBI, the operation was orchestrated by the North Korean hacking group TraderTraitor. The stolen assets are expected to be converted primarily into Ethereum cryptocurrency. According to the bureau, it is anticipated that "these assets will then be laundered through conversion via DeFi services and instant exchange platforms," after which further laundering stages will commence. However, the FBI provided no evidence of North Korean involvement.
Binance announced that it would allocate 50% of its User Protection Fund (SAFU) to compensate for losses from the attack. The platform previously stated that it had already reimbursed 90% of the stolen amount.
