Saudi-led coalition downs seven Houthi projectiles as Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Pakistan hold talks with Iran
Senior officials from four countries met in Tehran seeking to prevent renewed military escalation after the US-Iran war reignited Yemen fighting.
Saudi Arabia's coalition intercepted three ballistic missiles and four drones fired by the Houthis on Tuesday, coalition spokesperson Colonel Turki al-Maliki said, adding that the missiles had been aimed at the Eastern Province and the drones at the kingdom's southern regions, with no casualties reported.
The interceptions follow the destruction of three additional drones over Riyadh and southern regions on Monday evening. Saudi Arabia's civil defence agency had issued emergency alerts in the Eastern Province and Al Kharj Governorate before lifting them.
The attacks came as senior officials from Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Pakistan held talks with their Iranian counterparts in Tehran. Saudi Arabia sent Defence Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman; Pakistan sent army chief Field Marshal Asim Munir; Turkey sent intelligence chief Ibrahim Kalin. On the Iranian side, President Masoud Pezeshkian, Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi and Supreme National Security Council secretary Mohsen Rezaei attended.
Saudi Arabia said the visit aimed to open negotiating channels to prevent the return of military escalation. A joint statement issued late Monday said the four countries agreed to continue dialogue to strengthen regional cooperation for peace and security.
The broader conflict was triggered when the United States and Israel launched a war against Iran in February, which reignited fighting in Yemen. The Houthis subsequently seized strategic areas along Yemen's Red Sea coast from Saudi-backed forces, prompting a Saudi counteroffensive. A Houthi attack on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh this month killed at least 13 people and wounded more than 300.
