French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu declared on Saturday that wildfires across France had been brought under control, according to TASS citing his interview with La Tribune Dimanche newspaper.

Lecornu singled out the Gironde department in southwestern France, where he said firefighters faced particular difficulty because the blaze generated its own air currents and spread unpredictably. "Now the situation has become more stable again thanks to the outstanding work of the emergency services, the change in weather conditions and the constant monitoring of the fire," he said, as quoted by TASS.

Fires in Europe, particularly in Spain and France, have reached record levels this year. The European Commission said it mobilised 13 planes and four helicopters, as well as hundreds of firefighters from across the European Union, through the EU civil defence mechanism.
