Turkey Grants Red Crescent Broad Economic Privileges Amid Opposition Criticism

The ruling Justice and Development Party has submitted a bill to the Turkish parliament that grants the Turkish Red Crescent a broad package of economic and administrative privileges, a move coming against the backdrop of years of escalating controversy over the organization's performance.

The bill includes opening a pathway for government procurement without requiring competitive public bidding, as well as granting the organization expanded authority over its subsidiary companies and broader oversight of donation disbursement mechanisms. It also provides for the transfer of data on beneficiaries of government social assistance programs to the organization.

This legislation comes following widespread criticism of the Turkish Red Crescent following the devastating earthquake that struck the country, with reports that the organization sold relief tents sparking considerable debate, alongside questions about the management of humanitarian operations and coordination crises that accompanied them.

Opposition parties have expressed explicit rejection of the bill, describing it as a 'law of privileges and absence of oversight,' and warning that granting the organization these authorities without sufficient oversight will deepen the structural problems the institution suffers from.
