Seven Dead in Kobani Prison Fire Following Riots
Fire broke out inside the prison after inmates rebelled against a decision to transfer them to Aleppo, amid tensions that followed the killing of a former Kurdish fighter.
Seven inmates died and others were wounded when a fire erupted inside a prison in Kobani in northern Syria, following riots triggered by tensions that had been building in the hours before the incident.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that the rioting began overnight after authorities decided to transfer a number of inmates to another facility in Aleppo. According to Syria's official SANA news agency, the events left dozens injured, with burns and smoke inhalation.
The unrest came in the wake of protests that broke out in Kobani on Friday following the killing of former Kurdish fighter Sami Shikhmous Haysu, whose body was found after he was abducted. The corpse bore bullet wounds, according to Agence France-Presse.
The incidents lay bare the depth of divisions that persist in Syria following the ousting of Bashar al-Assad in December 2024. State leader Ahmad al-Sharaa had pledged inclusive governance reflecting the diversity of Syrian society, yet these events put those pledges to a severe test.
