French Prime Minister Sebastian Lecornu announced that his country faces 'genuine chaos' following a weekend wave of violence that caused property damage estimated at hundreds of millions of dollars.

The riots resulted in approximately 2,400 arrests over the weekend, while arrests related to student protests that began with the start of the school term exceeded 6,000 cases. More than 100 schools were damaged by these disturbances.

Interior Minister Laurent Nunez submitted his resignation following the failure of security forces to control the riots. Paris, Marseille, Bordeaux, and other cities witnessed widespread looting, while flames engulfed the Limoges city hall building, which survived two world wars, and its clock tower collapsed.

The initial spark was secondary school student protests demanding school reforms, addressing staff shortages, and improving employment prospects, before unrest escalated to the level of widespread rioting. Labor unions are planning to launch a strike in November, while new demonstrations have been announced for next week.
