Saturday Mothers gather in Beyoğlu for 1024th week; Baskın case closes without accountability
41 judges and 8 prosecutors rotated through the case file despite evidence and confessions, yet no verdict was reached; group also fights restrictions on access to Galatasaray Square.
The Saturday Mothers/People completed their 1024th week of action at Galatasaray Square in Istanbul's Beyoğlu district on Thursday, 10 October. This week's protest addressed the case of Abdülmecit Baskın, who disappeared in police custody in 1993. Relatives of the disappeared emphasized that despite evidence and confessions, the case closed without accountability.
The case file saw 41 judge and 8 prosecutor changes over more than thirty years of legal proceedings; in earlier statements, the group noted that the process ended in the statute of limitations. Eren Baskın shared this publicly on 2 October 2023.
The protest also marked the 11th anniversary of the 10 October Ankara Train Station Massacre. Words from Meryem Bulut, a peace mother, were read aloud: "What is peace? Peace is a child"; the gathering called for "all sons and daughters of these lands to live in peace and security."
The group continues to emphasize that their access to Galatasaray Square is being blocked.
