A jury in federal court in Oakland, California, unanimously rejected Elon Musk's lawsuit against artificial intelligence company OpenAI. The jury found that Musk had filed the case too late — meaning the statute of limitations had expired.
Musk had alleged that OpenAI was founded as a non-profit organization intended to benefit humanity, but had gradually drifted from that founding mission and transformed into a commercial enterprise. Musk was among the company's co-founders but left its board in 2018.
The case, heard in federal court in Oakland, had become one of Silicon Valley's most closely watched legal battles. The unanimous verdict effectively draws a line, for now, under Musk's legal campaign against OpenAI and its co-founder Sam Altman. Musk also heads xAI, a rival artificial intelligence venture competing directly with OpenAI.
