Midnight diesel discount of 1.05 TL: Expected 6.37 TL reduction, 5.32 TL goes to excise tax

Starting from midnight tonight, the per-liter price of diesel is falling by 1 lira and 5 kuruş. According to sector sources cited by Sözcü Newspaper, the decline in international crude oil prices had created a total discount potential of 6 lira and 37 kuruş per liter of diesel; however, 5 lira and 32 kuruş of this amount was directly credited to the Special Consumption Tax.

The difference a driver will feel at the pump will be only 1.05 TL. An average driver traveling 40 km daily from Şişli to Kadıköy and filling up their fuel tank once a week will save approximately 25-30 lira per month; yet if the full discount had been passed through, this figure could have exceeded 150 lira.

The Special Consumption Tax's share of fuel prices similarly prevented market declines from reaching consumers last year; the January 2024 reduction also limited actual savings through the same mechanism. The new prices will be reflected at pumps early tomorrow morning.
