Cost-of-living protests held on Sunday in Italy left a heavy toll: according to a report by Anadolu Agency citing Italian news agency ANSA, 28 people were arrested, 12 of them minors and 6 foreign nationals.

During violent incidents in Milan, Turin, and Bologna, at least 161 people were injured, including 141 security personnel and 20 protesters. In Milan and Bologna, store windows were broken, some were targeted for looting, and trash bins were set on fire. Material damage in the two cities exceeded an estimated 1 million euros.

It is alleged that 197 identified individuals initiated the violent incidents.

The protests are part of a cost-of-living wave that began in France and spread across Europe. In demonstrations in France attended by more than 500,000 people, one person died of a heart attack on Sunday.

Following reports that small groups continued to gather around Duomo Square in Milan on Sunday, security forces took precautionary measures.
