Malfunctioning chemical tanker towed from Kandilli, Bosphorus traffic reopens
Ivyan tanker carrying 6,000 tons of vegetable oil shut down Istanbul Bosphorus traffic for hours following engine failure.
The Coast Guard Directorate announced that Istanbul Bosphorus shipping traffic has reopened following an engine malfunction of the chemical tanker Ivyan, sailing from Bulgaria to Italy, off Kandilli. Hürriyet reported.
The 110-meter-long Ivyan was forced to anchor while carrying 6,000 tons of vegetable oil. Under coordination of the Istanbul Vessel Traffic Services Center, rescue tugs Rescue-7 and Rescue-11, along with rescue boat Salvage-9, were dispatched to the area. The tanker was towed to the Küçükçekmece Anchorage under the guidance of a pilot captain.
The Bosphorus is a route where commercial vessels frequently experience malfunctions; the last major closure occurred in July 2024 when an LPG tanker drifted. This time, the vegetable oil being transported was sufficient to activate emergency response protocols.
